Name: Tyler Corbett
Role: Web developer
Team: Fast Site
What do you do at Fast?
I work on the Fast Site home page. I also help program our seller and buyer dashboards.
Describe your typical day at Fast.
I’ll usually code for a few hours in the morning. Then I’ll have my daily standup with my team. Finally, I’ll finish with random tasks or more coding.
What led you to engineering?
I wanted to make my own video game when I was a kid, so I always played around with computers and coding. As I got older, I tried making websites and really liked it. I decided to quit my day job and go to a coding bootcamp in 2018, and I haven’t looked back!
Where were you before Fast?
Nike, for a year.
Why did you say yes to Fast?
Fast had cool hoodies! Kidding aside, I can’t stand having to type in my credit card, shipping info, and everything else over and over again when I’m shopping online. I’m glad to be part of making the internet an easier place to shop. I also love Fast Flex, which allows me to work remotely.
Where did you grow up and what were you like as a kid?
I grew up in a small town called Vancouver, Washington. But anyone from Vancouver knows to say that they’re from Portland, Oregon, instead because when you say you’re from, “Vancouver” people think you’re Canadian. Growing up, I played loads of sports. I was a bit shy but as I’ve gotten older and started traveling, I’ve become much more outgoing.
What are Fast engineers doing that stands out?
We really are fast. Engineers here quickly create new features and iterate on them to make them better.
Also, we have No-Meeting Thursday for engineers. That way you can stack all your hardest work on Thursday and power through it with no interruptions.
How is your desk set up?
Because I travel a lot, I have a portable monitor that I carry in my backpack when I’m on the go. I have it plugged into my MacBook with a wireless mouse and keyboard.
Proudest moment as an engineer?
Creating Fast’s bank details collection form that works in multiple languages and can collect information from almost any type of bank account.
Favorite thing about being an engineer?
Not just building pretty websites, but websites that help people.
Morning person or night owl?
Night owl. I’m embarrassed to admit the number of times I’ve been up all night playing video games in my life.
What’s something you regularly do, but know you shouldn't?
Drinking an entire pot of coffee.
Your non-negotiables for life?
Never be scared to try something new. You never know what you’ll enjoy or be good at. I always have a great time laughing at myself when I’m a beginner at something.
One thing about you that has been and will always be true?
I always try my best.
What advice would you, the engineer today, give the you first starting out?
Not knowing what you’re doing 100% of the time is okay. Your job is to figure it out, not to know how to do everything off the top of your head.
Where can we follow you?
