Role: Director of Security, Privacy, and Compliance
Talk about your background leading up to Fast.
I have been in the fintech industry for 10-plus years. It all started in 2011 when I joined PayPal, where I worked in multiple technology risk assurance roles. I developed a passion for creating secure and compliant products. I led the product risk function for Venmo and Braintree. Following PayPal, I joined Square to lead the technology compliance program. Before joining Fast, I was the Business Information Risk Officer at Silicon Valley Bank, responsible for cybersecurity risk.
How did you get to Fast?
Being in the fintech industry, I have been keeping an eye out for fintech startups intending to be part of an early-stage organization. I got a text followed by a phone call on a Sunday afternoon from Fast’s VP of Security. We had been speakers at multiple conferences and have known each other for years. We deployed Security and Privacy by Design principles, which explore how security and privacy professionals can help build large-scale fintech products. He shared his vision of Fast and introduced me to the team. The team and I shared the passion and belief that we can build an identity product to enable frictionless e-commerce. That’s when I knew that I must be part of this endeavor.
Where did you grow up, and what were you like as a child?
I grew up in a small village surrounded by rivers and mountains in Orissa, India. I have been influenced by my grandmother, who kept supporting us despite limited resources. She wanted me to acquire knowledge and be a lifelong learner. Looking back, I cherish these memories where I had access to everything fresh and organic from our backyard.
What was your first job?
I assembled desktop computers and servers. I realized investing four to five hours can get you someone’s monthly salary in those days in India. My first computer had 8 MB RAM and 1 GB hard drive, running on Windows 95.
What career path did you almost take?
I idolized my uncle, who is a neurosurgeon. Growing up, I wanted to be a doctor. I attempted the coveted admissions test for medical school but failed.
What app on your phone do you use the most?
It has been WhatsApp since the pandemic began. I connect with my family, especially my mom and aunts, every evening for an hour.
What food do you uncontrollably eat?
Indian pancake (Dosa). I can eat this for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Who is your favorite TV or film character?
Growing up, I was a big fan of all James Bond movies. Of late, my kids make me watch all of Marvel’s superhero movies. Iron Man is my favorite character.
What personal goal would you like to achieve in the next five years?
My wife is a big planner. At the start of each year, we plan for the year and reset our goals for the next five years. We have been fortunate to be where we are. At this point, our goal is to stay healthy and support our kids, family, and friends the best we can.
