Meet Rob Chan: The Fast Interview

Rob Chan, Senior Customer Success Operations Manager at Fast

Rob Chan

Role: Senior Customer Success Operations Manager at Fast

Team: Customer Success

Why did you join Fast?

I realized that the shopping basket icon on a website is just like the floppy disk icon to save a document. It’s built for another era. And after meeting the team at Fast, I jumped at the opportunity to join a bunch of builders that are experts at their craft, humbly building the future of identity and commerce on the internet.

What were you doing before?

I worked on the Product, Ops, and Sales teams at Uber. When we give people simple technology with amazing solutions at the push of a button, we can reduce the stressors in our day.

Where did you grow up, and what were you like as a kid?

I grew up in Sydney, Australia. I played a lot of basketball, volleyball, and picked up some cricket, too. As a teen, I got into online gaming and saw some of the early scenes grow in esports across Oceania. I loved team sports, competing, and trying new things! I still do!

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Being nominated by my university volleyball club team two years in a row as “Player’s player.”

What's your productivity hack?

As an ex-gamer (terrible now), I’m pretty quick on the keyboard. To help me be faster at work, I tab through all my open windows by pressing and holding command and ~ on a Mac.

When did someone's kindness toward you make a big difference in your life?

I’m always humbled when people who have gone deeper into a field and have become  authorities of that space spend time with me to demystify their craft.

I remember the first time this kindness was given to me through my schooling. When teachers would answer the question, “Why?” (and then the second “why,” and the third…) with such grace and patience to help me learn. Then, in the workforce, the first consulting team I joined had a lead partner who guided me to understand the mechanics of how lasting companies and seamless products are built.

Living or dead, who would you like to interview and why?

Paul Arden. His book, “It's Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want to Be,” really advanced my maturity from my teenage years to adulthood.

"Do not covet your ideas. Give away everything you know and more will come back to you."

What is your top travel destination?

Sydney, Australia. I miss Sydney summers and feeling fine sand beneath my feet. I miss diving around a beach volleyball court with buddies.

Where do you see yourself a year from now?

In a year, I’ll be building Fast and growing our teams to deliver delightful experiences. If all goes well, I’ll be doing so from one of our Asia-Pacific office locations.
