Meet Phil McDougall: The Fast Interview

Phil McDougall, Wellness Director at Fast

Phil McDougall

Role: Wellness Director

Team: People Operations

Why did you join Fast?

I reached the point that I wanted to reach in my own business, and I wasn't feeling very challenged. So it was two-fold. I knew so much about what Fast was and I really believed in the product. I found the prospect of being part of a team that is creating something which will help the whole world very exciting indeed. My entire job would be to positively influence the health, wellness and fitness of this exciting team. Wanting to join was a no-brainer.

What were you doing before?

I had my own businesses. I came from a background of military, then sports and remedial massage, and personal training. In 2016, I moved to San Diego to become the director of athletic performance for a strength education company. I wrote all of the syllabi for all the certifications, created an entire assessment and training system for helping everyday people reach their wellness goals, and then had the pleasure of traveling the world, teaching those certifications to fitness professionals and personal trainers, which was amazing. Meanwhile, I set up a remote coaching business and a virtual gym that I basically kept running. I recently closed it to start working at Fast, but recreating Fast’s very own version is on the agenda.

Where did you grow up, and what were you like as a kid?

I grew up in South Wales. I was born in a little town called Pontypool, grew up in Croesyceiliog. As a kid, I was completely obsessed with sports, mostly skiing. I made it onto the Welsh ski squad at the age of 16 and also rugby and triathlon, then became an elite-level triathlete also in my late teens.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

The one that sticks out is receiving my green beret as part of the Royal Marine Commandos. That was the one achievement that basically changed the way that I lived my life for the better.

What’s your productivity hack?

Digital detoxing, allowing you to switch off. Focus your mind on something else, completely, other than work. And when you can do that, you become so much more productive in the times when you want to be. And I'd say a second one is also understanding the time of day that you are most productive and gearing everything around that.

When did someone’s kindness toward you make a big difference in your life?

The most memorable ones that stick out are just the many acts of kindness and love I received growing up. I’m grateful to have received so much kindness from my family, and that basically formed who I am today.

Who’s your celebrity doppelgänger?

When we started dating, my wife told me that I reminded her of Pat Kiernan, the news anchor. And her friends said that I looked like Tintin.

Living or dead, who would you like to interview and why?

One of the subjects I'm most fascinated about reading and thinking about is the origin of the different religions and the effect that they have on society, human behavior, and everything. So I would absolutely love to sit down and interview Jesus of Nazareth.

What’s your top travel destination?

Anywhere I haven’t yet explored.

Where do you see yourself a year from now?

Running a well-oiled wellness program and remote coaching system that helps Fastronauts all over the world.
