Role: Senior Director, Payments Legal
Talk about your background leading up to Fast.
For most of my career, I’ve worked as a payments/fintech lawyer. I used to live in California when I worked at Facebook, but when I moved to Texas six years ago, I began commuting/remote-working for Uber. Most recently, leading up to Fast, I was general counsel at Plus Products, a cannabis edibles manufacturing company. Plus gummies are available in California and Nevada.
How did you learn about Fast, and why did you join the team?
(Fast Co-Founder and COO) Allison Barr Allen, who I knew from Uber, reached out to ask me if I knew of any lawyers in my network who might be interested in joining the company she co-founded. The timing was crazy because for a few months I had been thinking about leaving the cannabis industry to go back to tech. Fast caught my eye because its mission isn’t just interesting to me given my background but also so desperately needed given the way we shop and transact these days.
Where did you grow up, and what were you like as a child?
I grew up in Maryland. I was an ADHD kid in the days before that was widely medicated, but then I also was, well, still am, allergic to basically everything outdoors, so it wasn’t like my parents could just drop me off in the woods to focus that extra energy into finding my way home or anything. I got channeled into a ton of reading, indoor sports, art, music – anything that would keep me from running loose in the house just destroying things in my path.
What was your first job ever?
My first paycheck job was as an elf at the Santa picture station at the mall. I’m dating myself again because malls were still a thing at the time. My remit was to keep all the suburban parents from rioting over the line being too slow and the children from crying over Mall Santa.
What career path did you almost take?
Before college, I used to want to be a sports agent because I had a head for stats, watched ESPN every day, read Sports Illustrated cover to cover every week, that sort of thing. Nowadays, I can still crush a sports question in trivia but only if the event in question happened between 1994 and mid-1998.
Which public figure do you admire most and why?
I love Jeremy Clarkson. He’s a riot. Of course, I probably wouldn’t want to be his lawyer, but I loved Top Gear, and I love that he’s such an unabashed oaf. My dream dinner guest trio would be Jeremy Clarkson, Conan O’Brien, and Cardi B. Can you imagine?
What app on your phone do you use the most?
Instagram or Reddit. I follow a lot of dog accounts and strange subreddits.
What food do you uncontrollably eat?
Technically not a food, but I’m obsessed with Coke Zero. I drink an obscene amount, and I’m pretty sure all my organs are all desiccated and charred because of it.
Who’s your favorite TV or film character?
I love Tina Belcher from “Bob’s Burgers” and Pam Poovey from “Archer.” These days I’ve been trying to push myself to get my commercial driver's license “because Pam has one,” which is obviously ludicrous logic but also oddly inspiring.
What was the last show you binged?
“Derry Girls.” Highly recommend. Even just for the soundtrack, but the show is amazing also.
What personal goal would you like to achieve in the next five years?
Unfortunately, it’s a carry-over goal from the previous decade: to high-five a penguin. I’ve come close twice and been bitten once, but still haven’t succeeded. I would also love to swim with orcas.
