Meet Jack Chan: The Fast Interview

Jack Chan, Payment Operations & Risk Analytics Manager

Jack Chan

Role: Payment Operations & Risk Analytics Manager

Team: Payment Operations

How did you get to Fast, and why did you say yes to the job offer?

Previously, I was at Booz Allen Hamilton as a federal contractor because I wanted to understand how best I could make an impact. Prior to that, I was at Uber. I felt like I understood to a certain extent about how the private sector works, and I realized I had very little insight as to how the public sector works. So I dipped my feet in through federal contracting and confirmed my suspicion that federal public sector work is very slow and bureaucratic – and by design. There should be checks and balances when you’re moving that many people and that many resources, but it ultimately didn’t align with how I wanted to make an impact. So I was very excited when Justin (Abel), who was my manager at Uber and currently head of risk and payment options here, reached out to me and asked if I had any interest in joining him at Fast.

Where did you grow up, and what were you like as a kid?

I grew up in Oakland, California, in Dimond District. As a kid, I was pretty introverted. I was a big reader. I enjoyed spending time on my own and learning things at my own pace. I had a close, core group of friends.

Did you have any hobbies that carried through to today?

My dad pushed me to play classical guitar when I was five, and I played until I was 18, until I left for college. My dad would encourage me to play for large audiences and competitions, which I was very much terrified of. I didn't really get to enjoy my time, even though I spent so much time doing it. I stopped as soon as I got out of the house and didn't touch it for like five to six years, but I recently just bought an electric guitar because it's never too late to get a little rebellious.

What was your first job?

I was a payments analyst at a fintech called Earnest. That's what I got into first out of college.

What public figure do you admire most and why?

I'm a big fan of Kamala Harris, the first Black woman as well as Asian-American vice president. That is huge. I'm a little biased. I'm from California, too. I’m a fanboy.

What app on your phone do you use the most?

I would say YouTube, probably, but I also use Joey for Reddit.

What food do you eat uncontrollably?

I love rice. I love all the different incarnations of rice. There is White Jasmine, but I love dipping into White Pearl, sushi, basmati, dirty rice. You can go to Spain and give me some paella. I just love rice. It’s the perfect carb for me.

Who's your favorite TV or film character?

One of my favorite TV shows of all time is “The Wire,” and I just loved Stringer Bell. That guy is so intense, and Idris Elba is an amazing actor. That's a very serious answer, but a fun answer would be Dwight. I watch a lot of “The Office.” Just have it on in the background.

What personal goal would you like to achieve in the next five years?

I recently took the LSAT. Unfortunately, I got four points under that threshold where you need to be if you want to get into a top 8 school. I want to get a good enough score, get enrolled and then I want to transition to become a lawyer focusing on environmental law or criminal justice on the defense side because Earth and defendants need better representation. It's definitely a five-year, 10-year kind of deal.
