Meet Cecilia Chang: The Fast Interview

Cecilia Chang, Senior Product Designer at Fast

Cecilia Chang

Role: Senior Product Designer

Team: Product Design

Why did you join Fast?

I love shopping online and utilizing all the modern tools available to ease the purchasing process experience whenever possible, especially because I hate creating new accounts over and over again. Fast solves that problem. I joined Fast because it matches both my interests as well as my career skill sets.

What were you doing before?

I was at Intuit, designing finance solutions for small business owners and self-employed freelancers. Prior to that, I was at Google Nest designing the smoke alarms and smoke detector’s product experience.

Where did you grow up, and what were you like as a kid?

Fremont, in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. I went to schools where the Asian student population was over 90%. People often assume that makes me somewhat academically-driven or super-good at math and science, but that wasn’t the case. I was a semi-hipster kid who loved all things related to art, design, fashion, and literature.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

In the past seven years, I’ve traveled to 24 countries. Travel is life, and I hope the list will continue to grow.

What’s your productivity hack?

Yerba mate tea. If you haven’t tried it, get yourself some – the loose leaf kind that you have to brew and filter yourself. Yerba mate is on another level, compared to traditional coffee or tea. It gives you a pretty hard kick in the head for a long time without the crash. I highly recommend it!

In another life, what job would you have?‍

I’d probably be a journalist who visits different areas in the world and writes stories about interesting locals, or to be a jewelry designer, or to be a coffee shop owner. Life is short, there are so many things I’d like to do!

When did someone’s kindness toward you make a big difference in your life?

There were many people who helped and influenced me in the past years. In particular, I want to thank a design buddy from a long time ago when I first started in a user experience role. He was a former Savannah College of Art and Design instructor who taught me so much about the ins and outs of the UX industry, which guided me in the right direction in many years ahead.

Living or dead, who would you like to interview and why?

I’d love to research how people’s perspectives change from their childhood through adulthood and elderly years. It would be super interesting to learn how their beliefs change or remain the same as time and life progresses.

What is your top travel destination?

Peru. It’s diverse culturally and geographically, with many different sceneries to see, towns to visit, and delicious foods to try. A must-have on the bucket list!

Where do you see yourself a year from now?

I want to continue improving our users’ experience with Fast and grow our design team to support all of our initiatives. Outside of work, I’d love to get healthier by adding more workout routines into my day-to-day. Maybe I’ll start training for the next San Francisco Marathon.
