Role: Web Developer
Talk about your background leading up to Fast.
I did my engineering degree at the Queensland University of Technology. I was an electronics engineer for a couple of years and then did some coding for a few years. Then I started specializing in front end development, and then that ended up with me at Fast.
What about Fast? What was it about the company that made you say yes?
Two things, mainly. One was I like to work for a company where I can explain to people what I do fairly easily. People say, “What do you do?” I say, “I put buttons on the internet that make people's checkout experiences much faster than they were before.” And the other thing was Domm (Fast Co-Founder and CEO) being Australian, me being Australian. That also was a deciding factor.
Where did you grow up, and what were you like as a child?
I grew up in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. As a child, I was outside a lot and played lots and lots of sports.
What is your fondest childhood memory?
Camping and getting into the wilderness were probably my fondest childhood memories.
What was your first job ever?
I did a paper run when I was 10 to 13-ish. I would get the newspapers delivered. I'd fold them up, put them in plastic bags if it was raining, and then go around the neighborhood and put them in people's letterboxes or on their lawns. And I think that was once a week. I did that Thursday afternoons, from memory.
Which public figure do you admire the most?
I suppose I should say Muhammad Ali, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, but none of those people inspire me at all. If I wanted to be a middle manager, I should say Steve Jobs. He doesn't inspire me at all either. Let's go with someone a bit more obscure: an Australian ice skater named Steven Bradbury who won the Olympic gold medal in 2002. I wouldn't say that's inspired me, but it's someone who I look up to. Someone who had a plan, and his plan was to win. And if everything went right, he was going to win, and that's what happened.
What app on your phone do you use the most?
I probably use Twitter the most.
What is it about Twitter specifically that you like about it?
It's changing all the time. Every time I go on, there's something new to look at, and it just engages the neurons in my brain. More than anything else, it's something to pass the time, something different.
What food do you uncontrollably eat?
I drink a lot of chocolate milk. I don't really have a food.
Who’s your favorite TV or film character?
I would say Cleaver Greene from “Rake,” the TV show. It's on Netflix.
Any particular reason?
I just think he's funny. I think he's real. I think I can identify with people like him.
What was the last show you binge-watched?
“Midnight Diner.” It’s on Netflix. Before that, I binge-watched "The Queen's Gambit," "The Liberator," and I've been binge-watching “The Mandalorian,” but I suppose that's not binge-watching because it only comes out once every week.
What personal goal would you like to achieve in the next five years?
Early retirement. Most of my friends are retired and buying boats and traveling around the world. I'm still working, so I need to set that up.
