Meet Aaron Blackerby: The Fast Interview

Aaron Blackerby, Growth Inside Sales Representative at Fast

Aaron Blackerby

Role: Growth Inside Sales Representative

Team: Inside Sales

Why did you join fast?

I joined Fast in May of 2021. I'd been working at BigCommerce for a while, specifically on the business development side of things, and I worked with Christian Seme (Senior Manager, Inside Sales at Fast). He hit me up and said, "Hey, I think you'd really enjoy coming over here." The simplicity of the product, the fact that there was money backing it up, and an opportunity to come in on the ground floor were the main reasons for me.

What were you doing before?

I worked in cybersecurity for a bit. I worked at Duo Security, pre-acquisition by Cisco, about four or five years ago. I worked in tele-medicine as well at an organization called Vital Interaction. And then from Vital Interaction, I worked at BigCommerce for about a year and a half.

Where did you grow up and what were you like as a kid?

My parents divorced when I was 1, so I was like a dual citizen. I grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, and San Antonio, Texas, going back and forth between the two. As a kid, I played basketball and football; I was a class clown, very much one to get in trouble for talking. I also enjoyed writing.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Instead of going immediately to college after high school, I traveled around India for three months, and then I lived in Turkey and taught English there the following semester, for another three months. It was a life-changing experience.

What’s your productivity hack?

When I'm exercising or riding my bike, I put on some good music, review my day, and ask myself, “How can I manage this? How can I deal with this better?”

When did someone’s kindness toward you make a big difference in your life?

My first job out of college, I worked at a call center, and it was very oppressive. It was very much, “Make your calls.” And I remember being recruited to a small startup, and I was struggling at that job when I first came on because I was used to the same tactics at the call center. And my boss at one point pulled me aside and he said, “Look around the office. You're not just another butt in a seat here. We brought you here for your brain, so I want you to use it.” I remember feeling so empowered. It was a motivating factor for me to bring my best work every day.

Living or dead, who would you like to interview and why?

I would love to interview and have dinner with my personal hero, activist Mariame Kaba. She is an amazing mind. My mom has told me that I've always had a mind toward fairness and justice. And especially with events that were going on last summer, I was having a really hard time. I’m always looking for the commonalities among everyone but without reverting to the lowest common denominator.

Who is your celebrity doppelgänger?

I'm a big white dude with a beard, so there's quite a few options. Sometimes if I have a guitar in my hand, people will call me Chris Pratt. Jarrett (Martin, Sales Development Representative at Fast) just called me Jack Black in Tampa, and some folks have also called me Zach Galifianakis.

What is your top travel destination?

I really want to go to Africa. It’s a part of the world that I don’t have a very good understanding of.

Where do you see yourself in a year from now?

I hope that my girlfriend and I have moved in together, and I want to still be at Fast. I've enjoyed the people that work here.
